Frame for the phone
before the edit.

Vertical video works best when it is planned from the start. A good Reel, Story, Short or TikTok needs the subject, movement, captions and opening moment to fit the way people actually watch.

Vertical event video frame from a Wine and More masterclass

A vertical video is not just a cropped horizontal film. Important faces, products, hands, text and action need to be composed for the phone screen while filming.

Start with the opening second

The first moment should tell the viewer why to keep watching: movement, a clear visual, a useful line, a result or a detail worth noticing.

Keep the subject readable

Vertical framing has less horizontal space. Keep the important subject clear, avoid crowded compositions and plan movement that does not lose the point of the shot.

Use captions with intent

Captions can help, but they should not cover faces or important product detail. If text is needed, it should be planned with safe space in mind.

Capture versions, not leftovers

If the campaign needs horizontal and vertical edits, film both deliberately. It is usually more useful than trying to crop every shot later.
